Daith Piercings

The innermost fold of the ear — striking, well-hidden, and slower to heal than it looks.

The daith passes through the crus of the helix, the thick fold of cartilage right above the ear canal. It's one of the best-looking piercings there is and one of the more technically demanding to place, because the angle has to follow the curve of the fold precisely for a ring to sit flush rather than jutting out.

Technique and angle

A daith is pierced with a curved needle to follow the natural arc of the fold. Get the angle wrong and the jewelry sits proud, catches on everything, and takes twice as long to settle. This is the piercing where experience shows most obviously, and it's worth asking to see healed examples before you sit down — anywhere, not just here.

About the migraine claims

You'll find a lot online claiming daith piercings relieve migraines. There's no reliable clinical evidence supporting it, and we won't sell you one on that basis. Some people report improvement, which may be genuine or may be placebo — either way, get a daith because you like how it looks, and keep working with your doctor on the migraines.

Living with a fresh daith

It's tucked into the ear, which protects it from most snagging but also makes it awkward to clean and easy to compress with headphones or a phone. Over-ear headphones are out for the first couple of months; earbuds that sit in the canal are usually fine. Sterile saline spray twice daily, and otherwise leave it entirely alone.

Does a daith piercing help with migraines?

There is no solid clinical evidence that it does. Anecdotal reports exist and we're not going to tell you they're imaginary, but we won't recommend the piercing as a medical treatment. Get it because you want it, and keep your doctor in the loop on migraine care.

How much does a daith piercing hurt?

It's a thicker fold of cartilage than a helix, so most people describe a sharp, firm pressure for about two seconds followed by a dull throb. Nearly everyone rates it as far more manageable than they expected. It's over quickly.
