Conch Piercings

The broad bowl of the ear — the placement that carries a big ring better than any other.

The conch is the large cupped plate at the center of the ear, and it's the most versatile piece of real estate you've got. An inner conch stud sits like a jewel in the middle of the ear; an outer conch ring wraps the whole edge and becomes the anchor for an entire curated layout. Both go through thick, well-supported cartilage that heals reliably when it's left alone.

Inner versus outer

Inner conch sits in the deep bowl adjacent to the canal — usually worn as a flat-back stud. Outer conch is placed higher on the flatter plate and is what you want if the goal is a large ring encircling the ear. They're different piercings with different angles, so decide which look you're after before you sit down and we'll mark accordingly.

Start with a stud even if you want a ring

A large conch ring is the whole point for a lot of people, and it's still the wrong starter jewelry. Rings move constantly, which keeps a fresh channel irritated and encourages the hole to migrate. We pierce with a flat-back stud, let it heal for six to nine months, then swap you into the ring you actually came for. It's worth the wait, and rushing it is how people end up with a crooked conch.

Thick cartilage, real healing time

The conch is dense tissue. It's a reliable healer but not a fast one — six to twelve months is normal. Keep it dry, keep pressure off it, use saline twice a day and resist the urge to fiddle. Most conch problems trace back to somebody changing jewelry at month two.

Can I get a conch piercing with a ring straight away?

We won't do it, and any piercer who cares about your outcome will tell you the same. A ring's constant movement irritates a fresh channel and encourages migration. Heal it in a flat-back stud, then come back and we'll fit the ring properly.

Which hurts more, conch or helix?

The conch is thicker tissue, so there's more pressure and it takes a beat longer, but most people find it comparable to a helix and less sharp than they expected. The pop is louder, which surprises people more than the pain does.
