Color work at this shop covers everything from a single accent inside a black and grey piece to full color-bomb backgrounds where saturated washes explode out behind the subject. It's the most technically demanding thing to pack cleanly, and the payoff — a piece that stops people across a parking lot — is worth the extra chair time.

Packing color properly

Solid color means solid. Patchy packing shows up the moment a tattoo heals, and no amount of clever design hides it. Our artists work in deliberate overlapping passes, watching how the skin is taking the pigment and stopping before it's over-worked. Knowing when to stop is as important as knowing how to pack.

Color bomb and watercolor

Color bomb — loose, saturated fields of color behind or around a subject — is one of the styles this studio is known for. Done well it needs a black or heavily-outlined subject to hold the composition together, otherwise it drifts. The same is true of watercolor work: it looks spontaneous, but the pieces that survive have real structure hiding underneath the splash.

Skin tone and palette

Color reads differently on different skin, and any artist worth sitting for will plan for that. On deeper skin tones, high-value colors like yellow and white lose their punch, so we shift toward the saturated middle of the palette and lean harder on black for contrast. We'll show you comparable healed work on similar skin before you commit.

How long does color tattoo work stay bright?

With daily sunscreen and good aftercare, color holds its punch for eight to fifteen years before it's worth considering a refresh. Reds, yellows and whites soften first; blues, greens and purples are considerably more stable. Sun exposure is by far the biggest variable.

Can you tattoo color over an existing black tattoo?

Color will not go over solid black — black wins every time. What we can do is design around the existing black, use it as structure, and bring color into the surrounding skin. Bring the tattoo in and we'll tell you honestly what's possible.
