Oral piercings heal fast because the mouth is extraordinarily good at repairing itself. The long-term consideration isn't healing, it's your teeth. Metal resting against enamel and gum tissue causes real, cumulative damage over years, which is why jewelry choice and fit matter more here than almost anywhere else on the body.

Protecting your teeth and gums

We fit flat-back labrets with a low-profile disc rather than a ball on the inside, so there's minimal metal contact and nothing to click against your teeth. Once swelling settles we downsize you to the shortest post that fits, which keeps the disc from rocking against the gum line. Follow that and see your dentist regularly — gum recession from oral jewelry develops slowly and quietly, and catching it early matters.

The placements

Labret sits centered below the lower lip. Monroe sits above the upper lip on one side, mirroring a beauty mark. Medusa (philtrum) sits in the dip directly under the nose. Snake bites are a symmetrical pair at the lower lip corners; angel bites are the upper equivalent. Vertical labret passes through the lower lip itself, entering the front and exiting the top edge, with no interior post at all — which makes it the gentlest option for your teeth.

Swelling and the first two weeks

Lips swell more than most people anticipate. Initial jewelry is fitted long to accommodate it, so it will feel bulky for the first week or so. Stay on soft food, skip alcohol, spicy food and smoking as much as you can manage, and rinse with a sterile saline or a non-alcohol mouthwash after eating. Come back at the two-week mark and we'll downsize you at no charge — that appointment is genuinely important, not an upsell.

Will a lip piercing damage my teeth?

It can if the jewelry is wrong or too long. A properly downsized flat-back labret with a low-profile disc keeps contact to a minimum. Come back for your downsize, never wear a ball on the inside, and mention the piercing at your dental checkups so your hygienist can watch the gum line.

How long is the swelling going to last?

The worst is days two through four, and it's largely gone by the end of week two. Cold water, ice chips and sleeping propped up all help. That's why your initial post is fitted long — it needs to accommodate the peak.
