A tongue piercing is quick, heals fast, and requires more care in the first week than almost anything else we do — entirely because of swelling. Placement is checked against your frenulum and the visible vessels underneath before we mark, and anyone whose anatomy puts those in the way gets told so rather than pierced anyway.

Anatomy check first

We look at the underside of your tongue for the position of the frenulum and the major blood vessels. Most people have plenty of clearance in the midline. Some don't, and for them a centered piercing isn't safe — sometimes an off-center placement works, sometimes the answer is no. This takes thirty seconds and is not optional.

The first week

Peak swelling hits around days two and three and it is significant. Your initial barbell is fitted noticeably long for exactly that reason. Ice chips and cold water genuinely help. Stay on soft, cool food, rinse with sterile saline or non-alcohol mouthwash after eating, and skip alcohol and smoking. Talking will be strange for a few days and completely normal after that.

Downsizing is not optional

Come back at two to three weeks and we'll fit a shorter barbell for free. An oversized bar left in place is what chips teeth and wears at gums — the ball ends up sitting where your teeth close. This is the single most important appointment in the whole process and the one people most often skip.

How long before I can eat normally?

Soft, cool food for the first three to five days, and most people are back to normal eating inside two weeks. Avoid anything crunchy, very hot or spicy while it's swollen, and take smaller bites than usual until you've relearned where the bar sits.

Will a tongue piercing chip my teeth?

It can if you leave the long initial barbell in, play with it against your teeth, or wear metal balls long-term. Get downsized on schedule, break the clicking habit early, and consider swapping to a bioplast or acrylic ball for the tooth-facing side. Done right, the risk is low.
